Pelagic Fish

Pelagic fish live near the surface or in the water column of coastal and ocean waters, but not on the bottom of the sea. They can be contrasted with demersal fish, which do live on or near the bottom, and reef fish which are associated with coral reefs.

Demersal Fish

Demersal fish live and feed on or near the bottom of seas – the demersal zone. In coastal waters they are found on or near the continental shelf, and in deep waters they are found on or near the continental slope or along the continental rise. They can be found around seamounts and islands. Demersal fish fillets contain little fish oil (1-4 percent).
